Free phone charging benches have appeared around London

Islington, you’re a lucky bunch.

You’re the first to have London’s first solar-powered ‘smart benches’ installed as part of a new charity scheme.

The five benches, which allow you to charge your phone and access free wifi, can be found in across Islington Green, Newington Green, Old Street and Essex Road.

They are the result of a collaboration between Strawberry Energy UK, MKTG and Cancer Research UK and were launched on World Cancer Day on the 4th February. As part of the setup you can also donate £2 to Cancer Research UK through the benches’ contactless payment.

If they weren’t helpful enough, they also have sensors that monitor the borough’s air quality.

Michael Docherty, director of digital at Cancer Research UK, said: “Having used contactless technology in innovative ways in the past to engage the public in the work we do, we are always looking for new opportunities to incorporate contactless technology further throughout the charity and make it even easier for our supporters to help us beat cancer sooner.

These Smart Benches seemed like the next step in our use of contactless technology to bring charitable giving closer to our supporters, integrating it seamlessly into cutting-edge street furniture.”

Following this pilot, a further 10 benches will be installed by the end of February, with an additional 80 to be installed this year.

You can try the free wifi and charging docks in Islington Green, Newington Green, Old Street and Essex Road.

You bring the rum, I'll bring the raspberries. Perfect daiquiris all round.
